February 15, 2010 - UPDATE: HELPING HEAL THE VICTIMS IN HAITI
Our representative, Br. Manwar Ali returned from Haiti to Santo Domingo late last night. He reported that three, out of the four containers, reached Haiti safely on Sunday, February 13th. Total value of items in the four containers is US$110,000. Br. Manwar and other team members accompanied the containers with a rented vehicle and a driver. One of the trucks got a flat tire, however the truck drivers had equipment to fixthe tire and after 45 minutes they got going again … part of their expedition!
The team drove to the UN office and had the trucks await there. Later, they took the trucks to Masjid Tawheed and worked until evening, and got all three containers off loaded. 20 volunteers were lined up to assist them. The trucks left with empty containers back to Santo Domingo.
On Monday February, 14th, our team started early in the morning. They stayed over-night in Port-au-Prince and distributed supplies to four masajid for both Muslims and non-Muslim victims. They had consultation with the leaders of the masajid who agreed to work with them, using the masajid as the distribution centres for the victims in their community. They arranged for trucks and helpers coming to pick up supplies.
Other than the distribution to four masajid for the victims, some supplies were also given to:
· Two Medical teams - one from Canada
· A sister who is looking after 21 families (approx. 130 people) in a shelter of make-shift tents
· A church group who was looking after about 200 homeless people opposite the Zakat Foundation.
It took a full day and the team left Haiti around 4 in the evening in order to get across the border which closes at 7.00 p.m. They made it in the nick of time, otherwise they would have had to stay overnight at the border.
Our representatives Br. Manwar Ali and Br Imtiaz are staying in Santo Domingo to clear the five containers arriving on Wednesday (tomorrow). They hope to clear them by Thursday evening and get them into Port-au-Prince by Friday morning. These containers will be stored overnight at the UN facility for safety and security reasons, Four out of the five containers include mostly building materials and equipment, as well as some food. Total value of items in these four containers is approximately US$150,000. One of these containers is the one which did not reach Haiti with the three other containers. It will also be received and the supplies will be distributed on the same day to shelters.
A contractor has been engaged from Trinidad. He will bring along with him six of his men to start the construction of a Hospital, and Orphanage and 70 Housing units. They are scheduled to arrive Santo Domingo on Wednesday evening.
Our representative Br. Manwar Ali has reported that the UN has been very cooperative and are pleased with our work. Security personnel along the roadway of Santo Domingo have been very cooperative also.
HCI is currently working on sending a medical aid package to Haiti. Our representative has suggested sending this aid package to the Hospital in Haiti. He will contact us with further details about it.
