Acute Humanitarian Crisis in Somalia
Millions of people face severe food shortages in Somalia. Due to years of consecutive drought, people are hardest hit and face acute humanitarian crisis. With no rain in sight, the livestock continue to die thus collapsing the economy and forcing mass exodus of people to other areas. Somalia is a devastated land, a country that is unfortunately, totally forgotten despite its enormous problems and dire need for immediate assistance.
And so, HCI started working in the area, and has been successfully delivering aid to Somali Famine victim in Mogadishu, Afgoye and Shabeelle.
At the Feeding Center, managed by Dr. Hawa Abdi, 900 individuals per day are receiving HCI's help. In a month a total of 27,000 people displaced by Drought and famine will be covered.
In Mogadishu we are distributing monthly food packages. Beneficiaries receive approximately 15 pounds of culturally specific foods per household at a cost $150.
Also, the Government of Canada, through CIDA, has announced increased support for relief efforts to assist the people victimized by the drought in East Africa.
For every dollar Canadians contribute to registered Canadian charities responding to the East Africa drought, from July 6 until September 16, 2011, the Government of Canada will set aside one dollar for the Fund.
