Life in Gaza can be extremely difficult. The unemployment rate is around 40 percent, and war and blockades can have devastating effects on quality of life. This is especially hard on single-parent families led by women. One of these families includes Majd El Seqali’s family.
Majd El Seqali is a fourteen-year-old girl living in Khan Younis, Gaza. She is an overachiever, with a warm smile and brimming with energy and positivity.
However, since her father’s passing, her mother has had to accept full responsibility to support Majd and her three other siblings. As a result, the family struggled for survival. Their day-to-day livelihood was dependent on assistance from relatives and friends.
Majd was determined to find a better life for her family. She wanted to become an engineer and help rebuild Gaza. Thanks to HCI’s monthly child sponsorship program, Majd can focus on her dream for a better life for her and her family.
How sponsorship transforms lives
Majd’s family’s living expenses, health costs and education have been supported, allowing Majd to focus on school. Thanks to generous sponsors like you, HCI’s monthly contribution to the family has allowed them to get through difficult situations, such as when children are sick and need medication and get through the harsh winter season by having warm clothes.
Majd’s family also has access to HCI’s complementary projects, such as food package distribution during Ramadan, Christmas gift distributions, and Eid clothing drives. These activities revive important traditions and promote positive mental health and ease the families’ economic burden.
Where are they now?
Majd is now in the ninth grade, working hard to be successful at school! She is a hard worker at school, a great help to her mother at home, and an avid reader. In her spare time, she practices traditional Palestinian Dabke dance with her friends, draws and has a passion for the performance arts. She also helps her younger sister and neighbours with their studies and school projects.
Sponsorship not only helps children but the whole family. Majd’s mother, Taghreed, has access to HCI’s entrepreneurship/business development projects designed to empower women in their situation out of poverty and develop economic independence and self-reliance.
This puts her in a much better position to take care of her family’s needs.
HCI has been sponsoring orphans in the most impoverished communities of Lebanon, Sudan, Egypt and Palestine for over a decade now. There are currently about four hundred orphans from these areas sponsored by HCI’s Child Sponsorship Program. Without sponsorship, many of these children would be without sufficient food, adequate shelter, access to medical care, and the means for education.
We continue to share these stories to demonstrate your impact and how your continued support is changing lives!
HCI has been proudly serving the Muslim community for 40 years, and through your generosity and support, our programs are continuously improving the lives of many vulnerable people. Each donation made enables us to further the mission of taking impoverished people from crisis to sustainability.
