The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” [Muslim]
Sadaqah Jariyah refers to acts that are non-obligatory but carry immense rewards. It is usually translated as “ongoing charity” or “continuous charity,” and involves giving donations that will not only benefit the recipient but also the benefactor long after their death. It is thus one of the most rewarding acts a believer can undertake. An investment for their Akhirah, benefiting both them and society, providing sustainable development, and helping to improve people’s lives.
Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity that can be given to anyone in need, while Sadaqah Jariyah refers to donations that have the added benefit of continuous rewards for the donor even after their death.
For example, providing a family with a month’s supply of bread would be a form of Sadaqah. Opening a bakery in a local village would be an example of Sadaqah Jariyah as the benefit would be far more substantial, continuous, and ongoing even after the donor’s death.
Other examples include sponsoring an orphan, building a school or mosque, providing clean water sources to a community, planting trees, and so on. Sadaqah Jariyah is sustainable, with results that can last for generations to come.
Ultimately, all types of Sadaqah are beneficial and what really counts is one’s intention and sincerity. However, when you want your charity to continue long after you part from this world, then think about which charity will have the greatest benefit for people and communities as a whole.
We’ll list a few Sadaqah Jariyah projects below to inspire you!
Upon being asked which type of charity was the best, the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) replied; “providing drinking water.”
Water is undoubtedly one of the most crucial blessings we have been given by our Lord. As He says Himself in the Holy Quran; “And We have made from water every living thing.” (Surah Al-Anbiyah verse 30)
Unfortunately, today over 40% of the world’s population lacks access to this great blessing, which is sufficient clean water.
Building a well in a poor country is an amazing Sadaqah Jariyah project that will benefit multiple generations, and even surpass our own lifetime. Not only will this provide sustenance to those who are suffering from poverty and water shortages, but it can also lead to better health outcomes, improved livelihood opportunities, and overall economic development of the region.
It’s heartbreaking to think that there are over 50 million children without parental care in the world. These orphans lack basic amenities, such as adequate food and shelter, education, healthcare, and even love and attention. It is our duty as Muslims to help them in any way we can. Sponsoring an orphan through Sadaqah Jariyah is a great way to ensure that the child’s basic needs are met and that they have access to education, healthcare, and other essential facilities. It will also help them in developing self-confidence and lead a more meaningful life.
Mobile schools are a great Sadaqah Jariyah project that can benefit children in developing countries immensely. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, and by providing children with access to a mobile school, we can help them get an education and gain knowledge for a better future. Mobile schools can provide access to education in remote and rural areas, where it is not possible to build a physical school. These schools are typically equipped with a teacher and basic educational materials that can help children learn the skills they need to make a better future for themselves. Providing children with the right to an education will allow them to reach their true potential and thus become a means of benefit within their society. Any good they do will reach your account of good deeds. Any good others do as a result of the children you helped will also reach you and so on. The reward of such a Sadaqah Jariyah project is ongoing and lives on much longer than ourselves.
By donating towards Sadaqah Jariyah projects, you can make a lasting difference in the lives of those who are most vulnerable and in need. Whether it is providing clean water, sponsoring an orphan or building a school, Sadaqah Jariyah is an amazing way to give back to the community and benefit multiple generations. Sadaqah Jariyah is an act of continuous worship that will keep giving rewards even when we have passed away. So why not consider Sadaqah Jariyah as an investment in your hereafter and make a difference now?
May Allah accept all our Sadaqah and grant us the bounties of both worlds. Ameen.
