Sponsor an Orphan: Be the Reason a Child Thrives

Sponsor an orphan through Canada’s oldest Muslim relief organisation. Your monthly child sponsorship gives vulnerable child food, healthcare, education, and a safe home, and earns you the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Paradise.

"The one who sponsors an orphan and I will be in Paradise like this," and he held up his index and middle fingers together.

- Sahih al-Bukhari 6005

Why Sponsor an Orphan?

Across the world, millions of children have lost the people who were meant to protect them. Many are pushed into adult responsibilities far too early, becoming breadwinners and caregivers, missing school, and growing up vulnerable to exploitation, trafficking, and abuse. For a child, the ingredients of a happy childhood are simple: a safe home, a school to attend, food on the table, and someone who cares. Sponsoring an orphan gives a child all of it.

Caring for orphans holds a special place in Islam. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was himself an orphan, and he promised that the one who sponsors an orphan will stand beside him in Paradise, as close as two fingers held together. Few acts of charity carry a reward so direct and so beautiful. When you sponsor an orphan, you are not simply funding a child’s needs. You are following in the footsteps of the Prophet himself.

Through its Child Sponsorship Program, Human Concern International has spent over 46 years turning that compassion into real, consistent care. In 2025 alone, your generosity allowed HCI to sponsor over 5,800 children and support more than 15,000 family members. Behind every number is a child who now sleeps safely, learns in school, and dares to dream.

What Your Orphan Sponsorship Provides

HCI’s Child Sponsorship Program gives a child far more than a one-time gift. It surrounds them with consistent, holistic care designed to help them not just survive, but thrive. Your monthly sponsorship provides:

Quality education

School enrolment, fees, and the chance to pursue and fulfil their dreams.

A safe and secure home

Stable, protective housing where a child can simply be a child.

Nutritious meals

Regular, healthy food, plus nutritional supplements where needed.

Healthcare

Medical care that keeps a vulnerable child healthy and well.

Clothing and essentials

Clothing, hygiene kits, and monthly in-kind assistance that eases daily pressures.

Emotional well-being

In places like Gaza, psychosocial activities that support connection, resilience, and healing.

The monthly sponsorship cost is not a fixed marketing number. It is derived from the average living expenses of a family in the child’s specific region, and our local teams ensure the amount genuinely covers a child’s daily necessities, from food and shelter to clothing, healthcare, and school fees.

How HCI Selects Children for Sponsorship

HCI works closely with local teams on the ground to identify the children in the most desperate need. Sponsorship is never random. Every child is selected against clear, compassionate criteria so that your generosity reaches those who need it most.

  • The child is of school-going age.
  • The child comes from a low-income household.
  • The child is enrolled in school, unless a disability prevents attendance.
  • The child is not already receiving support from another non-governmental organisation.
  • Preference is given to female children, who are often the most vulnerable.
  • Priority goes to orphaned children living on the streets or in slums, involved in child labour, or at heightened risk of exploitation, trafficking, and domestic violence.

This careful, locally-led approach is what ensures that when you sponsor an orphan with HCI, your support changes the life of a child who truly has nowhere else to turn.

Orphan Sponsorship, Zakat, and Sadaqah

Sponsoring an orphan is one of the few acts of charity that can be given as Zakat, Sadaqah, or Sadaqah Jariyah, depending on your intention. Because the children HCI supports come from low-income households and are among the most vulnerable, orphan sponsorship typically falls within the categories of people eligible to receive Zakat.

If you intend your orphan sponsorship as Zakat, simply let us know, and HCI will ensure it reaches Zakat-eligible children in line with Islamic guidelines. Given as Sadaqah, it carries the immense voluntary reward of caring for an orphan. And because the benefit, an educated, healthy, stable adult, continues for a lifetime and beyond, sponsoring a child carries the spirit of Sadaqah Jariyah, the charity that keeps on giving.

A Child Is Waiting for a Sponsor Right Now

Somewhere tonight, a child who has lost everything is wondering whether anyone in the world remembers them. A girl who should be in school is working instead. A boy who should feel safe is afraid. Your sponsorship is the moment that changes their story, the day someone finally shows up for them.

Sponsor an orphan today and become that someone. For the cost of a few coffees a month, you can give a child food, healthcare, education, and a safe home, and earn the promise of standing beside the Prophet (peace be upon him) in Paradise.

Our local teams ensure the amount genuinely covers a child’s daily necessities, including food, shelter, clothing, healthcare, and educational fees, rather than a fixed marketing figure.

HCI works with local teams to select children in the greatest need. Preference is given to female children, and priority goes to orphans facing street life, child labour, or risk of exploitation.

Yes. Because the children HCI supports come from low-income, vulnerable households, orphan sponsorship typically qualifies as Zakat-eligible. Simply indicate that you intend your sponsorship as Zakat, and HCI will ensure it reaches eligible children in line with Islamic guidelines.

If you stop contributing, the child is offered to other donors. If a new sponsor is not found promptly, HCI upholds the child’s sponsorship for a minimum of one year using Zakat funds. If a payment fails for a technical reason like an expired card, HCI continues funding the child while our donor care team resolves it.

HCI’s program is designed to foster a meaningful bond between you and your sponsored child. For child protection, all correspondence must be facilitated through HCI to safeguard the child’s privacy, safety, and security.

Yes. You are welcome to give a gift to your sponsored child, including for occasions like Eid. Currently, HCI can facilitate monetary gifts.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “I and the one who sponsors an orphan will be in Paradise like this,” holding his index and middle fingers together (Sahih al-Bukhari). Sponsoring an orphan is among the most beloved acts in Islam, promising the sponsor closeness to the Prophet in Paradise.

Yes. HCI is a CRA-registered charity, so your orphan sponsorship is eligible for a Canadian charitable tax receipt, which you will receive after your donation is processed.
