New Beginnings for Gaza Families - Ottawa

The Situation

  • The Canadian government is allotting 5,000 Temporary Resident Visas (TRV) for Gaza evacuees, in addition to hundreds of Canadian citizens forced to leave Palestine and seek safety in Canada. In Ottawa, over 40 families have recently settled. It costs approximately $4000 every month to cover housing and essentials for a family.
  • Local organizations have expressed that they are running low on funds needed to support these families. HCI has already provided significant financial aid locally but the need continues to grow.
  • Immediate support is urgently needed to address key challenges identified through consultations with the local Palestinian community: housing and employment. HCI aims to establish a community-based and sustainable  solution to alleviate pressure on local mosques and, if successful, expand the program to other cities.

HCI’s Response

  • Supporting newcomers with rent, groceries, employment subsidies, and more as they transition into their new life in Canada to help them feel a sense of security and hope
  • Collaborating with local partners to create sustainable solutions that empower newcomers to achieve long-term independence and self-sufficiency
