HCI Food Bank

The Situation

  • Rising Food Insecurity: One in four households in Ottawa is food insecure, highlighting an urgent need for support.
  • Challenges for the Muslim Community: Ottawa has a Muslim population of 145,000 which is underserved by the city’s only Muslim food bank, which cannot meet growing demand.
  • Local Food Bank Limitations: Many food banks can only serve within their postal codes, leaving few organizations able to support the entire city.
  • Barriers for Homebound Individuals: There are no food delivery programs for those unable to leave their homes, creating significant challenges for vulnerable populations.
  • Lack of Sustainable Solutions: Few organizations are addressing the root causes of food insecurity, leaving many trapped in cycles of dependence.

HCI’s Response

  • A Legacy of Support: HCI was founded in Ottawa and has served its population for 45 years believing that charity starts at home
  • Launching a Food Bank: HCI is launching a food bank to address the growing food insecurity in the community
  • Leveraging Expertise: HCI will use local expertise and apply evidence-based solutions to reduce dependence on food assistance
  • Empowering Right Holders: HCI will offer workshops and hands-on support to help individuals achieve long-term stability
  • Collaborative Efforts: HCI will partner with the Ottawa Food Bank and United Muslim Organizations of Ottawa-Gatineau to combat food insecurity in our community
