45 Years of Concern for the Hungry: Fidya / Kaffarah

Pay Fidya & Kaffarah This Ramadan and Fulfill Your Duty

During Ramadan, fasting is a vital act of worship. However, for those who cannot fast due to illness, old age, or other valid reasons, paying Fidya or Kaffarah is a way to uphold your religious duty while supporting the poor and vulnerable.

What Is Fidya?

Fidya is a compensatory payment for those unable to fast due to legitimate reasons, such as chronic illness or advanced age. By paying Fidya, you provide meals to the needy, ensuring they too can experience the blessings of Ramadan.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“If any of you is ill or on a journey, then the same number (of days) should be made up from other days. And as for those who are not able to fast, they should feed a poor person for every day.” — [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

What Is Kaffarah?

Kaffarah is a compensatory payment for breaking a fast without a valid reason. To expiate for each missed fast, one must fast continuously for 60 days or feed 60 poor people if fasting is not possible.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:
“Whoever breaks his fast in Ramadan without a valid excuse must fast for two consecutive months, or feed 60 poor people.” — [Sahih Muslim]
