OVERVIEW

WATER IS LIFE

The same thing that provides our lives with comfort is limiting the quality of life for millions around the world — water. 

Each year, 443 million school days are lost from water-related challenges and illnesses. Dirty drinking water kills 1000 children each day through diarrhea, typhoid, cholera, dysentery and other water-borne illnesses. That means more people die every year… Lack of access to clean drinking water means a less prosperous community. 

It’s impossible to overstate the importance of clean drinking water. Access to clean water keeps children in school, prevents early death, and reduces poverty by enabling communities to build economy and agriculture for trade and sustenance. 

Human Concern International is on the ground in the most drought-stricken areas of the world to provide vulnerable communities with access to clean drinking water. To ensure that WASH (Water, Sanitation, Hygiene) programs are tenable, we work with local partners who are more intimate with the challenges of their communities to find and implement practical and effective solutions. 

Programs are only one part of the strategy. The second is staffing, training, equipping with programs with human resources on the ground. We invest in members of the community to manage and reinforce WASH programs and their infrastructure for lasting and sustainable change, maximizing donor impact and elevating the community for generations to come.

Water Projects: 2022

We have touched more than 40 countries around the world, and have impacted millions of lives. This year, HCI continues working on delivering sustainable water solutions across three continents. Take a peak below!

Projects in Africa

BURUNDI

We are building deep tube wells averaging at least 30 metres in depth, and also constructing latrines for the community. Community members will benefit from this initiative, improving their health and lives through access to safe water.

ETHIOPIA

In Ethiopia we provided people with improved access to water through reparation of broken and damaged water points. The project will also had the buy-in of the community through the establishment of a WASH committee and conducting of awareness campaigns.

KENYA

In Kenya, shallow water wells of between 15-20 metres in depth are being constructed in villages within the Tana River County region, an area impacted by drought with water shortages. This project will improve access to water for beneficiaries and their livestock.

Projects in the Middle East

GAZA, PALESTINE

In Gaza, we are constructing a water well and desalination

unit, which will help provide safe drinkable water. A solar energy system will

also be established to power the well and desalinization unit for

continuous water supply as power outages are common.

GAZA, PALESTINE #2

We constructed solar-based desalination units with a capacity of 5m3 to provide safe drinking water to students within schools in Gaza. Desalination is required to purify water from the Mediterranean Sea into fresh drinkable water.

YEMEN

Our project will provide a daily provision of 3000 liters of water, delivered through tankers to vulnerable and displaced persons. As an area that experienced ongoing conflict and with internally displaced persons residing there, it is not possible to build wells.

Projects in Asia

AFGHANISTAN

We are building water wells and latrines in different villages. The community members will benefit from improved access to water as the wells and latrines will be built in close proximity to community centers, mosques, public schools and healthcare centers.

BANGLADESH

We are installing deep tube water wells of at least 30 metres in depth. This improved water access and quality will benefit people where arsenic water contamination is a great health challenge.

INDIA

This project will provide people with a clean water supply through the installation of latrines and boreholes. The boreholes are about 36 metres deep. An integrated water supply system will also be developed, improving access to water where there have been acute shortages.

PAKISTAN

We are providing clean drinking water and sanitation facilities through the installation of boreholes of up to 30 metres deep, as  well as the rehabilitation of existing latrines. The project will assist beneficiaries to have safe and clean water and improved sanitary conditions.

FAQS

To ensure that all those in need in a particular region are looked after, we distribute water donations in accordance with the needs of each region.

We determine where to build wells based on the needs assessments completed by our field team. We tackle water challenges, community by community, for a greater and measurable impact.

1. Shallow well/dug well – This is a well that is 10- 15 metres underground.
2. Deep tube well – This is a well that is 20-25 metres underground.
3. Borehole well – These are wells that are 25- 36 metres underground.

Note: A ‘handpump’ is NOT a type of well, but a mechanism used to draw water out from a well. After a well is built, a pump is then attached as a component. The pump can be in the form of a hand pump, an electric pump, a hydraulic pump, or a solar powered pump.

The number of people benefitting from the well depends on:


a. The depth of the well, i.e., how much water is available for access daily (quantity).
b. How populated the area is compared to the availability of the water(demand).

Deciding on the depth of the well depends on:

a. The availability of groundwater or proximity to the water table.

b. The level of technology available.

c. Levels of contamination and pollution. For example, in areas where arsenic is high, deeper wells are considered versus shallow wells.

1. Shallow water wells with hand pumps have a lifespan of between 8-15 years.
2. Deepwater wells have a lifespan of about 25 to 50 years.
3. Boreholes have a lifespan of about 20 to 50 years.

This is under normal circumstances and with some form of maintenance. However, the material used has its own wear and tear which has an impact on the longevity of these different water sources. The environment also plays a role, for instance flooding can damage infrastructure unexpectedly.

It takes about 6 months. There’s a lot of logistics involved. Once the project is completed we will update you on its status.

OUR STAFF COMMENTS

Water is the cornerstone of life. Imagine not being able to open a faucet and drink clean water, or take a shower, or cook a meal. Water even helps make sure that children stay in class rather than walk an entire day to fetch buckets of water for their families’ needs. We’ve seen lives change in communities we’ve worked in once a well or a latrine was constructed.
